Welcome to our web site.

Civil Air Patrol has three primary missions - Emergency Services, Aerospace Education and Cadet Programs.  CAP flies 95% of the inland search and rescue missions tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center.  In an average year, CAP is credited with saving over 100 lives.

CAP was founded on December 1, 1941 - just 6 days before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.  During World War II, CAP pilots flew over a half million hours and were credited with sinking two German submarines and rescued hundreds of crash survivors.  We invite you to take a virtual tour through the National Museum of the Civil Air Patrol.

Rome Composite Squadron

Rome's original Civil Air Patrol unit was commissioned during World War II and was decommissioned shortly after the war's end.  The unit was reactivated in 1962 and has served the Rome and Floyd County community continuously since that time.

The Rome Civil Air Patrol Squadron is a Composite Squadron, meaning it is made up of both Cadets, and Senior Members.  Cadets may join CAP as young as 12 years of age and may continue in the program until they are 21.  They have the option of becoming Senior members at age 18.  Senior members may range in age from 18 to over 90 years old.

CAP Glider Program

The Rome Composite Squadron's facilities at the Richard B. Russell Airport north of Rome are among the best in the Georgia Wing.  Excellent location and facilities are the primary reasons why Rome is the home for the Georgia Wing's Glider Program.  A Maule MT-7-235 tow plane and three Blanik gliders are stationed with the squadron.

Rome has been the location of choice for one of Civil Air Patrol's National Cadet Special Activities, the National Flight Academy - Gliders.  The academy was moved to Rome in 2002 from Tuskegee, Alabama.  Each July this highly competitive academy attracts 24 of CAP's brightest and best cadets from across the nation for an intensive week of flight training from some of the top flight instructors in the country.

Civil Air Patrols Missions

Cadet Programs

Cadets in the Rome Composite Squadron's Cadet Program participate in a variety of required and optional activities.  Required components of the Cadet Program include: USAF Style Leadership Training, Aerospace Education, Character Development Training, and Physical Fitness Training.  Optional activities include Emergency Services Training, The CAP Rocketry Program, and the Cadet Orientation Flight Program for powered aircraft and gliders.

Cadets may also opt to try out for the unit color guard team and/or the rifle drill team.  The color guard has presented the colors at a variety of activities and events in the community including the Rome Memorial Day Parade and the opening ceremonies for Rome Braves games.  The color guard also competes in the annual Georgia Wing Cadet Competition.

Aerospace Education

Civil Air Patrol has both internal and external aerospace education programs.  Cadets participate in a mandatory aerospace education program as part of their progression. The Cadet AE program also includes optional powered and glider orientation flights. Senior members have an optional AE program.

The Rome Composite Squadron participates in a unique external Aerospace Education Program in collaboration with the Georgia Youth Science & Technology Centers, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Tiger Flight Foundation and the Richard B. Russell Airport.  Through this collaboration, airport tours and basic instruction in aerospace education are provided to school children of all ages.

Emergency Services and Disaster Relief

Rome Composite Squadron aircrews and ground teams provide valuable search and rescue services to their community, state and nation each year at no cost to the community.  Members volunteer their time to train for and execute missions that may involve anything from aerial search missions to hurricane/tornado disaster relief.  Members of the Rome squadron, along with CAP members from across the nation, traveled to Mississippi to help provide disaster relief after Hurricane Katrina.
